Jason Abel –
Organist and Choirmaster, Christ Church, Alexandria, VA
M. Jason Abel has been the Organist and Choirmaster at Christ Church since the fall of 2005. He directs an active music program with nearly 75 participants spread among three choirs of singers from age four to adult. Jason holds the Master of Sacred Music degree, cum laude, from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. His undergraduate degree, cum dignitate in musica, is from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He studied organ with Robert Delcamp, Larry Palmer, and George Baker. His conducting studies were with the late David R. Davidson.
Prior to arriving at Christ Church, Jason served for six years at Church of the Nativity in Huntsville, Alabama and was an adjunct instructor of conducting at Oakwood College. Previously, he also worked at Church of the Incarnation in Dallas as the Organ Scholar. He serves as Assistant Chapel Musician at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria and was a member of the Organ Committee for Immanuel Chapel.
Jason is a member of the Royal School of Church Music in America, the Association of Anglican Musicians (he currently serves as Treasurer-Elect of this organization), the American Guild of Organists, and the American Choral Directors’ Association. He is co-chair of the Newport Rhode Island RSCM course. He served on the Steering Committee for the 2010 National AGO Convention in Washington DC, and was on the Executive Committee for the 2014 National AAM Convention also held in DC. He has been a member of the Diocese of Virginia’s Liturgy and Music Commission for several years.
